A disappointing start to spring training has been confirmed as Jackson Holliday's broken hand will keep him out of action for the upcoming season opener. Orioles President of Operations, Mike Elias, broke the news on Wednesday, revealing that Holliday's injury will sideline him for the entirety of spring training and the highly anticipated Opening Day.
"It was during live batting practice in Sarasota on February 6th that Jackson felt something amiss in his right hand," Elias explained. "The diagnosis is a broken hamate bone, which is not a long-term concern, but it will keep him out for a while. We're looking at a return measured in weeks, but he won't be ready for Opening Day."
Holliday, who had a solid 2025 season with a .247 batting average and 17 home runs, was hoping to build on that success and take his game to the next level. As the former No. 1 overall pick in 2022, he played his first full season (149 games) last year and was eager to continue his progression.
But here's where it gets controversial: with Holliday's absence, the Orioles' recent trade for infielder Blaze Alexander from the Arizona Diamondbacks makes more strategic sense. The team will now need to rely on Alexander's skills for the foreseeable future, a move that could spark debate among fans and analysts alike.
So, what do you think? Is this a smart move by the Orioles, or will they miss Holliday's presence on the field? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
