Bold claim: YouTube is emerging as the frontrunner to secure a four-game package of NFL regular-season matchups retained by the league through its latest equity deal with ESPN.
Source-wise, industry reporters say YouTube holds the early lead in landing the four games that ESPN returned to the NFL as part of the deal that gives ESPN ownership of NFL Network in exchange for the NFL taking a 10% stake in ESPN’s network partner.
While YouTube appears to be ahead, other bidders remain in the mix. The four games are expected to have a relatively short availability window. Recent reporting indicates these four games could be included within a 15-game slate that would be shared among three streaming platforms—YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video—when the NFL revisits its media-rights agreements in coming years. Consequently, any four-game package sold for the upcoming season is likely to be structured on a one-year basis.
The quartet may not be limited to international contests alone. The NFL plans to play nine games overseas next year, with most of those matches slated for NFL Network. In terms of audience impact, YouTube’s foray into exclusive NFL content isn’t new: last season marked its first exclusive NFL game, a Friday night opener from Brazil. The US audience reached about 18.5 million viewers for the Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs clash, with an additional 1.1 million viewers tuning in from abroad.
