OU Softball: Power Hitting Pushes Sooners Past Montana, New Mexico State (2026)

Bold opening: Oklahoma’s power at the plate dominated, turning two road-wins into a statement win streak. But here’s where it gets controversial: does a doubleheader showcased by home runs guarantee sustained success, or will pitching tighten as schedule tights up? Either way, the Sooners left New Mexico with a 5-1 record and a lot to talk about.

OU Softball: Power hitting pushes Sooners past Montana, New Mexico State

Oklahoma showed its muscle at the plate on Friday, lighting up the Troy Cox Classic.
The Sooners rolled through their two games, starting with a 17-0 rout of Montana and finishing with an 18-6 romp over New Mexico State. Across the doubleheader, OU slugged 12 homers, with eight different players going deep.

With these wins, Oklahoma improves to 5-1 on the season. Here’s a breakdown of both games:

Oklahoma 17, Montana 0

Isabela Emerling wasted no time making her mark. After not starting any of the four games in opening weekend, the senior catcher homered early in the second inning and went on to hit two more homers, tying the program record for most homers in a single game with three.
Emerling’s power seemed infectious, as OU launched three homers in the second inning alone to build a 7-0 cushion and later finished with eight total long balls to enforce a five-inning run-rule victory.

On the mound, Mialo Guachino matched the offensive fireworks. The Ole Miss transfer drew the start and cruised, striking out six while permitting zero hits and just one walk over 4.1 innings. It was a strong bounce-back showing after some opening-weekend rough patches.

Oklahoma 18, New Mexico State 6

OU again jumped out quickly, propelled by Gabbie Garcia’s three-run blast that gave the Sooners a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.
New Mexico State answered with early pressure. Kierston Deal started in the circle but had another rocky outing, yielding two runs in the bottom of the first before a second-inning homer widened OU’s margin to 4-3. Deal exited after 1.2 innings, surrendering five hits and three runs.

The offense stayed in gear, though, roaring back with eight runs in the top of the third on five hits to push the lead back to nine.
The run-rule came in the fifth as OU exploded for six runs, highlighted by three homers from Kendall Wells, Ailana Agbayani, and Tia Milloy.

Audrey Lowry stepped in for Deal in the bottom of the second and finished with three hits allowed, three runs, and three strikeouts over 3.1 innings.

Notes on lineup flexibility
- Against Montana, OU shuffled catchers Emerling and Wells, with Wells serving as the designated player. Freshman Lexi McDaniel started at first base, and Sydney Barker opened at second.
- Against New Mexico State, Agbayani returned to second base with Barker moving to center field. Wells lined up at catcher, Emerling slid to first, and McDaniel took the designated player role.

Remaining schedule
- 10 a.m. Saturday vs. Minnesota (ESPN+)
- 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Idaho State (ESPN+)
- 1 p.m. Sunday vs. UTEP (ESPN+)

What this means going forward
- The early-season power is real, but the defense and pitching depth will be tested as the schedule intensifies. If OU can maintain bullpen consistency and keep baserunners limited, this lineup could pose major problems for opponents all season.
- The creativity in lineup construction signals confidence and depth, but it also invites discussion: is this approach sustainable against tougher pitching rotations? Could a reliance on homers eclipse the need for smarter situational hitting and run production when the long ball isn’t dropping?

What do you think: is Oklahoma’s early-season surge a sign of a championship-caliber offense, or will durable pitching and plate discipline determine the true contenders? Share your thoughts in the comments.
